IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology)
IIT Bombay
All M.Tech theses and PhD dissertations must pass Turnitin screening with AI detection enabled. Since early 2025, B.Tech final year projects are also screened. The threshold varies by department — most flag scores above 15% for supervisor review.
IIT Delhi
IIT Delhi's academic integrity policy now explicitly covers generative AI. Research proposals, dissertations, and project reports are screened. The Computer Science department is the most lenient with AI tool usage for coding, but written analysis must show original thinking.
IIT Madras
IIT Madras screens all postgraduate submissions. The university ran pilot programs in 2024 and fully integrated AI detection across departments by mid-2025.
IIT Kanpur
Similar implementation to other IITs. The main difference is that IIT Kanpur allows documented AI usage in preliminary drafts as long as the final submission shows substantial human revision.
NITs (National Institutes of Technology)
NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal, NIT Surathkal, and NIT Calicut have all activated Turnitin AI detection for thesis submissions. Engineering reports are particularly affected — the structured format (Abstract → Introduction → Literature Review → Methodology → Results → Conclusion) generates high AI similarity scores even for purely human-written text.

While not yet mandatory, the advisory accelerated adoption across both central and state universities.
