Academic Integrity & AI Policies at Indian Universities

Indian universities are developing AI policies guided by UGC recommendations. Most have adopted a "declare and demonstrate" approach rather than an outright ban.

UGC Guidelines

The University Grants Commission issued its "Responsible Use of AI in Higher Education" advisory in 2024. The framework encourages universities to teach responsible AI use rather than prohibit it. Students should understand how to use AI tools ethically, and institutions should implement detection mechanisms to ensure academic integrity.

Institution-Specific Policies

IITs

IITs follow a "use but declare" approach. AI is permitted for coding, data analysis, brainstorming, and research exploration. Written reports and theses must reflect original analysis. Most IITs now require an AI usage declaration form with thesis submissions.

University of Delhi

DU has introduced AI usage declaration requirements for all thesis submissions. Undeclared AI content discovered during Turnitin screening can result in disciplinary action. Different faculties have different tolerance levels — Science departments are generally more permissive than Humanities.

Private Universities

Ashoka University has launched an "AI Literacy" course as part of its foundation year. BITS Pilani requires mandatory disclosure of AI use in Practice School reports. Manipal and SRM have institutional policies that mirror UGC guidelines.

State Universities

State universities are implementing policies at varying speeds. Major state universities in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and West Bengal have started adopting AI detection, while smaller institutions are still developing their frameworks.

NAAC and Accreditation

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has incorporated AI-readiness as a quality indicator. Institutions pursuing higher accreditation grades are incentivized to implement AI detection and develop clear AI use policies.
